Length, Height and Proportions

A bench that is the wrong length looks wrong in a space no matter how well it is built, and a seat height that is off by an inch or two is the difference between comfortable and not. Length, seat height, seat depth and back height can all be specified, which is why we ask for them rather than assuming them.

The most useful thing you can send is the run of wall, path or porch you are working with, and a note about who will be sitting on it. A bench that will mostly hold two adults with a drink is a different bench from one that is there to take boots off at a back door.

Backless, Low Back or a Full Back

A backless bench reads as part of the landscape and works where it will be seen from all sides or simply walked past. A low back adds support without blocking a view across a garden. A full back is the most comfortable for sitting at length and the most visually present in a small space.

None of these is harder to get right than the others. They are different decisions about the same piece, and the right one usually follows from where the bench is going rather than from taste.

Where the Bench Will Sit

A bench under a covered porch behaves very differently from one that sits in open Houston sun and rain. Say where it is going. Wood that can dry between rains lasts longer than wood pressed flat against a wall, and a bench that will never be moved is worth placing somewhere the ground drains.

This is the same thinking as the rest of our advice on how to care for outdoor wood in the Houston climate, and it matters more for a bench than for most things, because a bench is used year round and rarely brought inside.

Material

Cedar is the starting material, the same as it is for our raised garden beds and planters. The final lumber grade, board thickness and fastening method are still being documented while the first production models are built and evaluated, and no service life is promised, because how long an outdoor bench lasts depends on the material, the exposure, the finish and how it is looked after.

Finish Options

Finish choices are being finalized. Options under consideration include leaving the wood unfinished to weather naturally, or applying an exterior-grade protective finish.

Planned Products

Adirondack chairs are a planned product, not a current one. We have not built production prototypes yet and are not taking orders for them. This page will be updated when that changes.

Delivery

Delivery is available across the Houston area. Pricing depends on distance, size, and access.

What moves a delivery price is the distance from our shop, the size and weight of the bench, the quantity, whether any assembly is involved, and how accessible the drop-off point is. The delivery format is confirmed in the quote rather than assumed, because it can depend on the size of the bench, transport limits and the access at the address. Send Enough Information for an Accurate Review

A bench is quoted from the space it is going into rather than from a catalogue, so the request is where the useful detail belongs. None of this has to be exact at the first message.

Start from a current bench style

If one of the current bench styles above is close to what you have in mind, name it in the request: a straight garden bench, a porch bench or an entryway bench. If none of them fits, describe the setting and the intended use instead and we will work from that.

Give the length you have to work with

The run of wall, path or porch you are working with is the single most useful measurement. If you already know the seat height, seat depth or back height you want, include those too, since all of them can be specified. Approximate is fine at this stage; a rough measurement now is more useful than an exact one later.

Say where the bench will sit

Where the bench will sit helps give context for its size, exposure, access and finish direction: a covered porch, an open outdoor space, or against a wall are all different starting points. A photograph of the spot, with something ordinary in it for scale, tells us more than a description does.

Include the delivery ZIP code

The quote form asks for a delivery ZIP code, because delivery is quoted with the order rather than charged at a flat rate. What moves it is the distance, the size and weight of the bench, the quantity, whether any assembly is involved and how accessible the drop-off point is. See delivery areas.

Requests are stored, acknowledged and reviewed by a person. The quote sets out the product, the dimensions, the quantity, the delivery details, the price and the expected timeline, and every detail is confirmed with you before production starts. Common Bench Questions

Can you build a bench to fit a corner, a curve or an awkward run?

That is a custom project rather than a standard bench. Send the shape, the measurements and a photograph of the space and we will tell you honestly whether it is something we can build well. Can a bench match a planter or a raised bed?

Yes, and it is worth asking at quote time rather than afterwards, so the material and the finish are chosen for both pieces together rather than separately.

Do you build seating for commercial spaces?

Benches for commercial outdoor spaces are part of what this page covers, and repeat units for commercial spaces are on the list of projects we consider. Tell us the quantity and the setting. Consistency across a multi-unit order is handled the same way it is for commercial planters.

Do you have standard sizes and prices?

Not yet. Finish products, colors and pricing are not confirmed, so benches are quote based for now and the quote is built around the dimensions you give us.

How long will it take?

Lead time is confirmed with your quote rather than published in advance. It depends on the size, the quantity and the work already in the shop.
